Once again this year, Governor Ted Strickland and Lt. Governor Lee Fisher have proclaimed May “Ohio Tourism Month” in recognition of tourism’s contribution to Ohio’s quality of life and to our economy.
While many of you have set your plans to promote the economic impact of tourism in you area during National Tourism Week (May 9-17, 2009), we encourage you to join the Ohio Tourism Division in promoting the entire month by getting involved with your local Barnes & Noble Bookstore’s Ohio Tourism Month celebration, providing information to us on your consumer related activities and by submitting your travel packages and specials to DiscoverOhio.com.
We will be promoting events and special packages/deals all month. Following are details of the various programs and projects designed to help jump start tourism to Ohio and to your community, attraction, lodging facility, restaurant, etc. during the month of May.
• Barnes & Noble Bookstores (Month of May) – The Division has supplied all 20 stores with Ohio Tourism Month signage that will draw attention to the bookstores’ special displays of Ohio tourism guidebooks, Ohio authored books, books on Ohio sites, etc. And each store is looking for help from the tourism industry for experiential tourism events, so check out what your store has planned and offer them a fun, engaging event or activity idea to help promote tourism in your area.
• Ohio Magazine (Month of May) – The May issue on newsstands now features a six-page editorial section highlighting Ohio’s music experiences, space/aviation experiences in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing and a host of new tourism opportunities, exhibits, etc. from around Ohio. 11,000 Ohio Travel Planners have been polybagged with Ohio magazine for the month and placed for sale in 800 bookstores, grocery stores, drug stores, etc. across the state.
• In-State Advertising (Month of May) – The bulk of Ohio’s in-state tourism advertising will be on display in May including gas pump toppers, digital bill boards, radio, print, television commercials, Reds and Indians baseball games, etc.
